Underwater Docking Station

A home for Exploration.

Resident Blue is an undergraduate mechanical engineering senior design team at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. Resident Blue is dedicated to the research and design of an Underwater Docking Station that will serve as a home base for future resident autonomous underwater vehicles.

Through the partnership with the Mechanical Engineering Department and the Robot Autonomy and Navigation (RAN) Lab at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa (UHM), Resident Blue (RB) will provide a verified Underwater Docking Station (UDS) design for resident autonomous underwater vehicles (RAUVs) by December 2020.

Features of the UDS:

  • Wireless Charging

  • Wireless Data Transfer

  • Securement of RAUV by Electromagnets

  • Continuous presence supporting the RAUV for at minimum 1 month

Why are we taking on this project

Purpose

The purpose of the UDS is to support the endeavors of discovering the remaining 80% of the undersea and collecting data along the ocean floor.

Importance

The importance of the UDS is that this will directly play a role in the use of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) being deployed throughout the ocean for research.

Impact

The impact of the UDS is not to disturb or further endanger the oceanic ecosystem but rather be designed as eco-friendly as possible to aid in understanding such a vast undersea world.
